Source:

Chairs are a good thing. Without chairs, everyone would have to drive Segways. Duck-duck-goose would be impossible. And imagine trying to have dental work done while standing. Nevertheless, we now know sitting all day can shave years off your life and raise your risk of health problems like back pain, weight gain, and evendepression. A 30-minute workout each day may not be good enough. Short of quitting your job and becoming a crossing guard, here are some ideas to help you ward off the ill effects of too much caboose-parking.

Balance it out

Thanks to our computer-dependent workplaces, the slouching and bad posture many of us adopt lead to muscle imbalances, which increases the risk of pain and injury. Locate weak muscles with these Men’s Journal squats and strengthen them with exercise.

Pelvic clock

Pelvic clock is another way to find muscle imbalances while decreasing the stiffness that arises from sitting all day and improving pelvic flexibility. It involves lying down face up and moving your hips and pelvis around the “clock” formed by your belly button, pubic bone, and hips.

Fidget

A study from a Mayo Clinic doctor on NEAT, or non-exercise activity thermogenesis, found that simple things like fidgeting and tapping your toes can ward off harmful side effects of sitting like proclivity to obesity and heart disease. Avoid letting your body go completely idle.

Seated back stretch

It is possible to stretch without leaving your chair. While exhaling and keeping your shoulders relaxed, fold your torso over your legs from the pelvis until your hands reach the floor and hold there for 30 seconds. Come back up on an exhale, again making the pelvis the focal point.

Perfect the art of breathing

Sitting in front of computers makes us lazy, even when it comes to breathing. We take incomplete breaths without using the diaphragm. If you take five minutes to consciously inhale slowly and deeply, then exhale rapidly and fully to expel all the CO2, you will have more energy and increase cognition.

Shrug it off

Shrugging your shoulders helps break up tension caused by sitting slumped forward all day. It’s also more of that minor but important movement you need. Keeping your muscles relaxed, slowly lift one shoulder to your ear, slowly lower it, followed by the other side, then both sides together.

Back extension

This simple exercise can be done on a break to reverse all that hunching over. Raise your arms over your head and touch your palms together, and tilt your head back slightly. Hold for up to 30 seconds.

Get a good chair

One of the most crucial elements of ergonomics is having a chair that gives you adequate lumbar support and maintains your spine’s natural S-curve. Make sure it allows you to adjust back height and depth. Believe it or not, good quality chairs can be had for under $100.

Use a footrest

To increase blood circulation while sitting, take advantage of a footrest. This also takes some pressure off your lower back, reduces fatigue, and heightens awareness. You can even get one that rocks, allowing you to get a little more movement and burn a few more calories.

Knee raise crunch

Another move you can do while sitting is called the knee raise crunch. Sitting up straight with both feet on the floor, slowly raise one foot while curling the shoulders forward. Hold there for one second before releasing and doing the other foot. Repeat up to 20 times.

Rub your temples

Sitting all day makes you fatigued and stresses your body. You can undo those effects by rubbing your temples, something you probably do instinctively when you’re stressed. It can help relieve headaches and relax you. Keep your elbows on your desk and rub in circles, slowly.

Massage your neck

Save yourself a $50 trip to the masseuse and give yourself a little massage at your desk to relax those muscles scrunched by sitting. For example, you can work out the trapezius, the big muscle that runs the length of the shoulders and up the neck and often becomes tense from sitting.

Standing hip flexor stretch

Before your hips start to complain when you sit down, try an ounce of prevention with this stretch. Place one foot on a knee-high chair, raise the opposite-side arm, and lean towards the chair keeping your back straight. Now reach to the right with your raised arm and hold. Repeat for the other side.

Flip your workout

You get enough of closing yourself up by sitting; you don’t need more of that at the gym. As pro surfer Laird Hamilton found after tearing his ACL, hanging upside down is a wonderful way to stretch your spine, take pressure off the organs, and basically counterbalance everything you do in the right-side-up world.

Stretch your chest

To combat your shoulders rounding forward while sitting, stretch out your chest muscles. You can do this by extending your arms 90 degrees from your body in a doorway and leaning forward until you feel it. Or, do the classic: clasp your hands behind your back and raise them as far as you can.

Shore up your core

If you have a weak or imbalanced group of core muscles, back pain is sure to follow. There are a number of easy core exercises you can do, like crunches, ab presses, and side planks.

Inconvenience yourself

Since everyone else is fighting for the parking spot nearest the door of your office building, you have your choice of spots at the back. This increases your walking distance and helps you move more on days when you’re mainly sitting at your desk.

Sit on a fitness ball

Your coworkers will snicker, but then again, in a world full of unhealthy practices, taking charge of your health always looks weird. Sitting on a fitness ball chair forces you to sit up straight and to constantly exert energy to maintain balance.

Skip the elevator

Aren’t you sick of waiting in line for the elevator? The average person burns seven times the number of calories by taking the stairs than by riding. Are you getting the message that you need to move yet?

Eat well

It shouldn’t be hard to see how sitting all day can increase the risk of depression. Eating a healthy diet is one way to fight it. And since we know you’re already at your computer, mix in a funny video now and then to lighten your mood.

Keep your knees healthy

Sit with knees bent to 90 degrees for long enough, and you’ll be asking, “Can you see my knee brace under these pants?” Maintaining a healthy weight, doing stretches (the right way), and exercising your hips are a few ways to keep your knees strong and pain-free.

Sleep

For a totally painless way to recover from prolonged sitting, get a full night’s sleep, seven to nine hours. If you look at the effects of sitting like any other injury, you’ll recognize that recovery is aided by sleep and prolonged by sleep deprivation.

Minimalist shoes are a relatively recent invention spurred by the realization that walking or moving barefoot was in fact much healthier and better for the human body. The natural movement permitted by these types of shoes is aimed at lowering pressure on our feet and legs and preventing pack pain or poor posture. Minimalist shoes traditionally have a much thinner sole and little or no offset (offset is the tilt between heel and toe, many shoes have a sizable difference between the height of the heel and the height of the toe).

If you have been wearing the traditional sneakers for a long time, making the switch to barefoot shoes can be somewhat unnerving. The extra toe room, flexibility and overall ‘minimalization’ of the entire shoe is relatively unheard of. The movement only began gaining ground a few years ago as people started to realize some of the downsides associated with conventional runners.

Despite the fact that running was the primary driver to create a more natural style of footwear, there are now shoes for casual and work use that provide the same benefits and positive effects. Since we don’t spend the majority of the day running (unless you’re a professional marathon runner), it makes sense to invest in a pair of shoes that we could be wearing upwards of eight hours a day.

Although humans have been walking barefoot for thousands upon thousands of years we made the switch to shoes mainly because of the dangers of living in an urban area. Sharp rocks, glass, paved roads etc. were all much more common as humans drew together and started living in massive civilizations. The Romans started wearing sandals which led to different qualities of shoe or sandal. This in turn allowed fashion to start affecting footwear which is when the serious foot and back problems began.

Although we may have lost the ability to go completely barefoot in a heavily urbanized area, modern technology has brought back the value of the past. We’re rediscovering our natural style of movement. Traditional runners can often cause us to land with a thud on our heels sending large amounts of pressure and strain up the back of our legs and into our knees or the base of our spine. Minimalist footwear helps to return some of that tactile sensation that our feet would provide if barefoot as well as to distribute the weight more evenly across the entire foot.

All in all minimalist shoes are starting to rise from obscurity into mainstream society. The truth is you’ll be able to stay mobile and active much longer if you treat your body correctly. Using footwear that works with the natural motion of your body rather than against it is a valuable step you can take in ensuring that you can keep running and walking far into your old age.

Minimalist Shoes are the way of the future, we need to get back to our roots and start treating our bodies the way nature intended them to be treated through thousands of years of evolution.

You’ve just turned 50. You are satisfied with your career, the kids are getting older, life seems great! As you get out of the shower you notice a small roll on your back and you think–Yikes! Where did that come from? As you scour the rest of your body, you wonder how you possibly missed the extra skin sagging under your arms and your lower belly drooping more than you remembered. You silently (or completely out loud) scream ahhhhhhh!!

As you begin to panic, and wonder how you’re going to fix this before it gets worse, I want you to know you can change this. You are not doomed to living out your 50′s, 60′s, and even 70′s feeling anything less than the BEST.

How do you do this?

Strength Training

Did you know that after age 40 the average woman begins to lose about 1/2 a pound of muscle per year, and after menopause the average woman begins to lose about a pound of muscle per year?

Now that may not seem like a whole lot but 1 pound of muscle burns approximately 50 calories a day. Over the course of only a few short years, you can lose 3 pounds of muscle. You have now lost the ability to burn 150 calories a day! If you then still continued to eat as if you had that 3 pounds of muscle (like most of us would), you will now gain 15 lbs in one short year. WOW!!

I’ve got good news!

Physical activity and especially strength training has a tremendous impact on what your body looks like and how it feels. There have been a number studies done that show it only takes 2-3 times of regular strength training a week for as little as 12-16 weeks to see significant changes.

Forget the studies, I have numerous clients that have changed the shape of their bodies, said good-bye to chronic head-aches and pack pain and embraced a stronger, healthier body to last a lifetime!

You are never to old to begin a strength training program. Start today, to live for tomorrow!

Kelly Parker is an ACE and Can-Fit Pro certified fitness professional and has been helping people reach their health and fitness goals for over 11 years.

Visit [http://www.how-to-get-fit.com] to learn more on how to burn fat and get the toned body you’ve been striving for.

Most of the time, people find themselves fat when the see bulging curves in their tummy. Without a doubt, a flat and toned abdomen is a sought-after symbol of dieting success.

There are two famous exercises when it comes to flattening the stomach: sit-ups and leg-lifts. These work-out routines have been long-established abdominal exercises.

Though sit-ups and leg-lifts can tone your abdominal muscles, they don’t reduce your waistline. No matter how often you do these exercises, even if you spend years for them- they’re not going to slim your waist. You will only gain pack pain.

It’s time to do a switch. Forget about your sit-ups and leg-lifts. Here are some effective abdominal exercises that will not stress you out:

Transpyramid Breathing

This exercise is termed this way because it targets two muscles: transversalis and pyramidalis.

1. Lie on your back and relax your shoulders. Bent your knees just enough that your feet rest comfortably on the floor. Your index finger should, by this time, point to your belly button without touching it.
2. Take and then exhale. At the end of exhalation, you should feel your abdomen motion moving inward towards your spine.
3. Now inhale. Observe how your belly tends to “pop” against your fingers.
4. Exaggerate the inhale and exhale process. You should see that you’re pulling your abdomen every time you exhale and pops it out when you inhale.

When you are seated and doing this exercise, you need to make sure that you’re in an upright, straight-backed chair.

Seated Lower Back Stretches

One advantage of these of stretches is that you can do it almost anywhere, whether you are in the office, at home, or standing by somewhere.

1. Sit in a firm-seated chair with your feet flat on the floor and knees apart.
2. Slowly and gently bend forward, reaching down to place the palms of your hands on the floor.
3. Hold the position for 5 seconds.
4. Repetition can range from 6 to 10 times.

Don’t try to do this routine quickly. Since you are stretching your lower back muscles to the max, sudden movements can strain those muscles, giving you unbearable lower back pain.

Look Slimmer with Body Magic

Compliment these routines with girdles for women like Body Magic. Body Magic is a body shaper created by Ardyss International. Body shapers are garments that are used to compress problematic fatty areas like the waist and thighs. In particular, Body Magic will slim the stomach area, lift the breasts, and round the bottom to give you a more appealing figure. With Body Magic, you can look incredibly sexier in no time.

Studies show that most patients who suffer hemiplegia after stroke have shoulder subluxation. With incidences higher in severely-paralyzed patients, shoulder subluxation is one of the most common secondary muscoloskeletal problems after stroke. Shoulder subluxation, nevertheless, can be treated in various ways.

Also referred to as instability, a shoulder subluxation involves the partial dislocation of the shoulder joint wherein the ball of the upper arm bone slips partially out of the shoulder socket due to spastic muscles pulling the humerus and shoulder blade into abnormal positions.

Treatment involves the use of heat or ice packs, pain medications, support devices, and shoulder strapping to reduce the pain plus various therapies like prolotherapy, closed reduction, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, electrotherapy, occupational therapy and muscle toning-strengthening exercises.

1. Closed Reduction and Immobilization through supportive devices

Closed reduction is a medical procedure wherein the head of the humerus is put back into place by applying a traction to the arm. Afterwards, immobilization takes place through the use of supportive devices for four weeks to prevent the arm from moving. Supportive devices like shoulder cuffs, slings, and braces prevent trauma during ambulation but prolonging their use can cause immobility and encourage spasticity.

2. Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy is a medical procedure imploring natural treatment wherein solutions are injected into the affected ligaments, tendons, and joints to stimulate an inflammatory reaction in the body, which in turn, heals the subluxation.

3. Electrotherapy

Functional electrical stimulation and cyclical electrical stimulation of the shoulder muscles reduce subluxation but prevents it only if treatment is continuous.

4. Exercises

Exercises vary per patient as shoulder exercises are not for those with a history of shoulder dislocations prior to their post-stroke shoulder subluxation to avoid further dislocation. To relax muscles which are too tight, girdle and scapular muscle strengthening exercises are recommended for patients with recurring shoulder dislocations. Weight bearing exercises, rotator cuff strengthening exercises, and shoulder musculature strengthening exercises are often applied to most stroke patients with shoulder subluxation. Remember, it is important to implore a gentle, unexaggerated range of motion each time the patient is exercised.

5. Proper positioning

Proper positioning involves maintaining the correct posture while sitting, lying in bed, or doing daily activities. Always remember to carefully transfer, position, and assist stroke patients in daily activities as these are also preventive measures to stroke subluxation.

Ergonomic desk chairs are designed to help maintain spine health via good sitting postures. They help to reduce incidences of developing pack pains and lower back ailments, enhance blood circulation and productivity. Some are designed for spine health maintenance, while others are for helping you nurse your bad back. So remember, you need to choose the right type of chair that fits you physical needs and condition.

The main criteria of choosing the right one are height adjustability of the backrest, armrest as well as the seat. Adjusting the chair to suit your height is critical as the wrong height could cause bad posture like hunched back, or slouching. In addition, you will also develop symptoms like carpal tunnel syndrome, where a key vessel in your arms is blocked and blood circulation is affected. Hence the ability to adjust height is of fundamental importance in ergonomics.

Padding and covers in ergonomic desk chairs are also key components. Sufficient and the right amount of padding at the right area gives you both comfort and added support and protection. Take for instance, if you are a constant sufferer of back pain, you should look for one with lumbar support pillow to ensure provide you with the added back padding.

Some people prefer leather covers as they need minimal maintenance. However, the ergonomic mesh office chair has taken the industry by storm in recent years. This is largely due to the fact that the mesh materials used allow for better breath-ability than leather, cloth or synthetic materials. In addition, the mesh designs also give a futuristic look and feel to the chair.

There is, in fact, no best ergonomic chair. Really, it is all about what chair best fits your physical needs and condition. But the most reassuring thing is that ergonomic desk chairs are well worth the investment for your spine health.

So FIND the Best Ergonomic Chair information and Give yourself and your child a headstart in Spine Health with Ergonomic Desk Chairs.

Three years ago, I couldn’t walk a block down the street. I would start having asthma problems (I was on two drugs to control it), and heart palpitations. I suffered from migraines. Low back pain. PMS so bad that when that time of the month came around, I would do nothing but vomit and cry for a week. I couldn’t sleep. I was allergic to everything and taking three drugs to keep me from sneezing constantly. My blood pressure was through the roof – 180/90. I never had any energy and my mood sucked. When I did sleep, I would wake up feeling terrible – like I needed a pot of coffee to function. I craved starchy foods and sugar. I was constantly hungry. My hands and feet would fall asleep at night because of poor circulation. I was borderline type 2 diabetic. I even needed sunglasses on really dark cloudy days.

In addition to the asthma medications, the allergy medications, and the painkillers, I was also taking birth control pills. The people at Planned Parenthood didn’t want to renew my prescription because my blood pressure was so high that any little thing that made it worse was considered a real threat to my continued existence. It was thought that I wouldn’t really need birth control because of my weight issues anyway, but they looked for an alternative to humor me.

Not only had I been dieting since the age of fourteen, but the first doctor I saw about my health photocopied the food pyramid and told me to eat better. The second doctor I saw didn’t touch on diet at all and started writing me prescriptions for medications that cost upwards of $200. It was finally my mother who asked the question, “Why is my oldest daughter so unhealthy and overweight when she grew up eating the same thing as everyone else in the house, and now eats better than the rest of us do?” She went back to school to find a solution.

And she did. No, I haven’t lost more than 75 pounds in the last three years because for one of those years, I actually got pregnant and had a kid. But I did lose that much weight. I’m off all prescriptions. My blood pressure was last 112/70. I don’t know my BMI because my mom doesn’t consider it a usable number when measuring personal health, and my doctors haven’t ever cared. I don’t have asthma problems anymore. I still do suffer from allergies to penicillin and something in natural cold remedies that I haven’t been able to isolate yet (thank goodness it wasn’t actually bananas), but I don’t suffer from pollen allergies, allergies to dogs or cats, or any other thing in that vein. My PMS is gone. So gone that I frequently forget I’m going through that time of the month. I don’t get migraines. I don’t have low pack pain. I’m not a total nervous wreck, and I only need to wear sunglasses when it’s super bright outside (my pupils now actually dilate and contract like they’re supposed to). I can sleep.

So, what was the solution? Simple: complete nutrition. I was on a diet of mostly pasta, with a variety of different sauces and meats, to be sure, but still mostly pasta. When my mom told me that I was killing myself with my food, I changed my diet overnight.

I won’t lie: it sucked. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, for those first two weeks. It was hell. I had cold sweats, total lethargy, horrible mood swings, and full-body ache for two weeks straight. But that’s what getting over an addiction is like.

The diet I ended up with is the Fire Your Doctor diet. It’s simple: eat whole food, grown as nutritiously as possible, with no soy. Of course, there are a lot of details, and Michael (the writer of Fire Your Doctor) gives you a lot of help in finding those foods you need, but once you internalize the basic concept (and get over the sugar/flour addiction), it’s easy to follow. I eat whenever I want to, I’m never hungry, and I can even eat things like ice cream (as long as it’s a whole, natural food I make mine myself!)

I think everyone deserves to be as healthy as I am today and I know better than most people just how dramatically your life can change! Just do some research into whole foods, and if you don’t feel confident enough in what you find, check out what the experts say!

Zero Gravity Chairs Are Designed For Your Health

A zero gravity chair is a modern style of chair that was originally designed based on information from NASA. When their astronauts would begin their launch towards space, they would have their feet raised above the area of their hearts. This position gave a reduction to the amount of pressure the spine had to endure while traveling. Based on this concept, this ergonomic chair was created.

Anyone that experiences the zero gravity chair, will no doubt notice an improvement on any pain they may be experiencing from their current chair. That is a direct result of the technology used in designing the chairs. Take a moment and review the benefits you can get just by adding one a zero gravity chair to your work or home office environment.

A reduction of pressure on your spine

Muscle Tension will be significantly reduced

Stress normally placed on the heart will be reduced

Better circulation with an increase blood oxygen level

Significantly less pressure on the heart with increased lung capacity

There are of course more benefits to this style of ergonomic chair as well. Those who have poor posture will notice a significant improvement while sitting in them. While you are watching your favorite program, or typing away at the computer, your body will remain in a perfect posture position. This can increase relaxation and provide relief to areas of your body that may be out of line.

Spine discs experience an unloading while you are sitting in the chair. The benefit of this is a reduction in degenerative spinal issues as the fluid is drained from the disc area. As a person increases the amount of load on their spine on a regular basis the spine begins to shrink. During exercise your body increases the amount of spinal fluid that goes into the spine. The neutral position that can be achieved in the zero gravity chair is one of the best ways to get your body to unload.

Another benefit a person gets when using this chair is a relaxed state on the back muscles. When your muscles are relaxed circulation improves and can be delivered throughout the body normally. But when you have a strained muscle the blood flow becomes constricted and your body can’t deliver oxygen rich blood as easily. When this happens back problems increase in an individual. Of course an ergonomic chair helps to prevent this from happening and can improve some pack pain.

Since these many of these chairs are lightweight and portable it is possible to set them up anywhere they are needed. The fabric is soft upholstery and it can withstand weather if brought outside, and the coated steel frame has a strong and durable construction that allows enough give without falling apart. Of course you can get lounge chairs made from leather as well.

For the person with serious back issues, the zero gravity chair can help you significantly in an overall improvement in relief. It is important to also note there is more than just a single type of chair. There is the outdoor recliner, an indoor zero gravity recliner and even a zero gravity massage chair that can soothe your back relief even further.

If you’re in the market for a Zero Gravity Chair, you’ll find that they come in many varieties and to fit every budget.

There are many ways that people try and slim up nowadays. It can be anything from pills to exercise equipment. No matter what the newest weight loss fad is there are always skepticism and evidence to support each one. The problem with this is that the product always seems to never match with what it says it will do. These are known as “wonder” drugs or “accessories”. These are things that say that can do anything from making you lose weight to curing cancer. There is one item that seems to match up with what it says it is capable of though. This new tool is the inversion table. Don’t think that this is some sort of graph or even an actual table for it is not. Do inversion tables really work? To learn more read on and I will tell you what it is that makes inversion tables something new to try.

What is an inversion table. What makes inversion so special? What do they say that they can do? How much do they cost? Where can you get them? What are the risks associated with using them?

An inversion table is a device that is built somewhat like a hammock. It is like a chair that folds out straight or curved backwards. The table boasts its ability to bend to a certain degree. It has several straps for support and safety. It has a variety of uses.

The first use of inversion is for pack pain. There are many problems that can occur with the back with the muscles and such. The inversion allows one to stretch one’s back much more than they could naturally and in a controlled environment. People who have chronic back pain can find much use in a table.

The next use it says it can do is help you lose weight. This is because you can do sit-ups in an inversion chair and they would be much more comfortable and easy. It would make it more likely for you to want to do sit-ups. It is also great because sit-ups can be associated with causing back pain, which inversion can consequently help alleviate.

They can be obtained from many places. The first place to get them would be the easiest as well. This would be online. You could search through many sites and find a wide variety of inversion tables at different prices and with different brand names. You would also check out your local sporting goods or exercise stores. Some large department stores may carry them as well.

There could be some risks associated with it. It does cause you to bend your back into awkward positions and if this isn’t done correctly it could cause back problems. You should follow any instructions that come with the machine and any safety guidelines it may have.

That is all there is to know about inversion tables. They have some pretty good practical uses but you should always consult a doctor before trying anything new.

During pregnancy, the joints and ligaments become more relaxed than usual because of the action of a hormone called relaxin. This alters the mechanics of the sacroiliac and other joints, and increases the chances of injury such as strain or sprain or undue pressure on intervertebral discs.

In addition, the extra abdominal weight increases the spine’s lumbar arch as the buttocks push out to compensate. This understandably alters the body’s center of gravity and stresses lower back muscles. In pregnancy, the body becomes more flexible and it is especially important to guard against injury and take care not to overstrain the joints and muscles of the back.

Prolonged sitting experts greater than normal pressure on discs and puts the back at risk. Office workers, for example, whose work confines them to a desk or computer for many hours a day without periodic breaks, are vulnerable to back problems. So are people who are confined to bed through illness.

If the muscles of the back and abdomen are not exercised on a regular basis or the spine put through its range of motion, the back become especially vulnerable to various stresses. As a result, joints stiffen ligaments and muscles over contract, blood flow is restricted and any degeneration of vertebral joints is accelerated.

Being over or underweight is a risk factor for pack pain. As already noted, the extra weight of pregnancy increases the pressure on discs of the lumbar spine. On the other hand, extreme weight loss, as seen in conditions such as anorexia nervosa, may result in unusual pressure on nerves because of the loss of protective muscle tissue as well as lower bone density.

Now that you’re pregnant, you want to do everything that’s right for your baby. You’ve already made several changes in your lifestyle; you eat more nutritious foods and take prenatal vitamins. You’ve switched to diet soda (but just one per day), and have cut out caffeine. Is there anything else you should do to keep yourself and your baby healthy? Yes! Exercise!

Studies have shown that there are several physical and emotional benefits enjoyed by women who exercise, pregnant or not. For one, pregnant women who regularly exercised at least three times a week had more restful sleep, more energy during the day and took fewer day-time naps than their counterparts who didn’t exercise while pregnant. The former group also experienced easier and shorter labors.

Here is a list of other benefits proven by studies of pregnant women who exercised on a daily basis:

f Aids in pregnancy weight control

f Easier post-partum weight loss

f Faster labors with less need for induction

f Little need for pain-killing drugs and epidurals

f Ease of common pregnancy discomforts, i.e. back pain, constipation, leg swelling and varicose veins

f Better moods and less depression during and after pregnancy

To get started on your pregnancy exercise plan, first, ask your doctor if you should exercise. Some women are at high-risk for miscarriage, and are often not allowed to exercise or only in a limited capacity.

If your doctor agrees that exercise is OK for you, find out what exercises that are safe for you. If you didn’t exercise before becoming pregnant, you need to start slowly and graduate in small steps so as not to put undue stress on yourself or your baby. Non-weight-bearing exercises, such as swimming, water aerobics and cycling are excellent ways to start a new exercise program! If you already exercise, you will probably be able to use your current regimen, with a few modifications to accommodate your pregnancy.

As your baby, and consequently, your body, grows, your center of balance shifts, and your posture will adapt by changing. You should avoid exercises and playing sports in which there is a risk of falling, or hard impacts to the abdomen. That means skydiving is definitely out!

Drink plenty of fluids before and during exercise. Start with relaxation and stretching before beginning exercise. Be sure to not allow yourself to become overheated, breathless or fatigued. If you experience dizziness, headaches, muscle weakness, nausea, chest pain, or contractions, stop exercising immediately! After your first trimester, avoid doing exercises while lying on your back; it decrease blood flow to your uterus, and the weight of your baby may put pressure on your back, resulting in pack pain or strains. Just listen to your body; it will tell you when you need to slow down or stop exercising! When you’ve completed your exercise routine, “cool down” with some more stretches and relaxation. With your muscles nice and supple, it feels wonderful to just sit back and relax for a minute!

Exercise, combined with a diet of plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits, a healthy balance of protein and complex carbohydrates, and water, water, water, puts you on a beneficial road leading to a quicker and easier labor, and, at last, holding your new baby in your arms!

Staying healthy during your pregnancy isn’t as difficult as it may seem. You really can have a healthy pregnancy without pounds! You can look and feel better, have less stressful labor and delivery, and a quicker recovery time, with better muscle tone and less weight to lose after your baby is born! So get, and stay, healthy! I promise you won’t regret it!

Most rhinoplasties are performed because the patient desires an improvement in appearance and/or nasal function. (S)he may simply want a nose which is in harmony with the rest of the face rather than one which is out of proportion with respect to the other facial features.

Rhinoplasty surgery is as much artistic in nature as it is scientific, rarely are any two of patients’ noses identical. Each patient’s nose should fit his or her face. Dr. Simoni recommends computer generated before and after pictures during consultations; so every patient can explain and observe desired changes prior to surgery. The alterations should be determined by many factors, including one’s height, age, skin thickness, ethnic background and configuration of other features such as the forehead, eyes and chin. All in all, Dr. Simoni believes in a natural looking nose rather than one which appears to have been operated upon. No patient really wants an assembly line nose job; they want a nose individually tailored to their own features.

Rhinoplasty is considered an outpatient procedure. Rhinoplasty is a very delicate operation and is extremely different from other plastic surgery procedures such as breast implant or tummy tuck. In the hand of a good rhinoplastic surgeon, rhinoplasty carries a minimal post operative discomfort.

The nose is reduced in size by removing excess bone and cartilage. The remaining structures are repositioned through a series of carefully planned internal nasal incisions Dr. Simoni does not recommend “packing” the nose after surgery. With the elimination of nasal packing, pain, swelling, bleeding, discoloration, etc., are dramatically reduced making the recovery period much more pleasant for the patient. Dr. Simoni recommends a special technique of suturing the internal nasal tissues back in place eliminates the necessity of packing.

An often-asked question by patients contemplating rhinoplasty is “do you have to break my nose?” In a new technique, an specialized surgeon makes an incision into the nasal bones when they need to be repositioned thereby eliminating the more antiquated technique of “breaking” the bones and resetting them. Dr Simoni feels this technique allows for better control of the operation and reduces the patient’s anxiety about having surgery.

Payman Simoni, MD is a dual board certified facial plastic surgeon. Dr. Simoni’s background in nasal surgery combined with his natural looking results, has made him one of the most sought after rhinoplastic Surgeons in Beverly Hills, CA.
Rhinoplasty (commonly known as nose job) is the name of the operation designed to improve deformities of the nose with plastic and reconstructive surgical techniques... and to improve breathing and sinus function. The operation consists of carefully removing any "excess" bone and/or cartilage while rearranging or reshaping the remainder.

(S)he may simply want a nose which is in harmony with the rest of the face rather than one which is out of proportion with respect to the other facial features. On the other hand, it may be, as is often the case, that the nose is becoming progressively more disfigured the older the patient becomes until breathing difficulty occurs.

At times patients have deformities of the inside of the nose which impair breathing, cause headaches, or contribute to sinus trouble. These problems cannot be satisfactorily treated medically without simultaneously straightening the external nose.

Like faces, every nose is different; some noses are too long, some too wide, some have large humps, some project away from the face, and so on.

Since rhinoplasty surgery is as much artistic in nature as it is scientific, rarely are any two patients’ noses identical. A skilled rhinoplastic surgeon would strive to make each patient’s nose fit his or her face.

The nose is reduced in size by removing excess bone and cartilage. The remaining structures are repositioned through a series of carefully planned internal nasal incisions. The skin then heals to the new framework.

Rhinoplasty: The Surgery Protocol

Prior to surgery, certain medications may be given to promote healing and help hold to a minimum the amount of swelling and discoloration, which may occur.

The surgery is usually done in a surgery center or hospital. Following surgery, the average patient can be discharged.

At the completion of surgery, a small protective adhesive dressing and splint are applied to the nose. The external protective splint and tape are to remain in place for about one (1) week.

Although a drip dressing is applied which obstructs the nostrils, some surgeons do not “pack” the nose after surgery. Patients, therefore, are more comfortable and generally less swollen. With the elimination of nasal packing, pain, swelling, bleeding, discoloration, etc., are dramatically reduced making the recovery period much more pleasant for the patient. In this technique, the surgeon sutures the internal nasal tissues back in place eliminates the necessity of packing. This technique has been one of the greatest advances in nasal surgery, reducing much of the undesirable postoperative discomfort those patients whose noses are “packed” experience.

Septoplasty: Nasal Breathing Problems

One of the common causes of breathing difficulties is a “deviated” or crooked nasal septum. The septum is a bony and cartilaginous partition that divides the inside of the nose into two chambers. If it is dislocated or leans to one side it can interfere with the flow of air through one or both sides of the nose.

Even patients whose septum is not “deviated” frequently have a dominant nostril (airway passage). Most of us have a dominant eye, hand or foot; it is not unusual for one nasal airway to be better than the other. Your surgeon will evaluate the inside of the nose and attempt to improve the airway if (s)he feels it might be improved with corrective surgery.

Surgery can often straighten or remove the offending portions of the crooked bones and cartilages and improve breathing; however, the membranes lining the inside of the nose can become swollen from one or more of the following conditions:

a. Allergies (hay fever)

b. Changes in temperature or environmental factors

c. Viral infections (colds)

d. Bacterial infections

e. Emotional disturbances

f. Over-use of nasal sprays

g. Exposure to irritants in the air (hair spray, smoke, etc.)

None of these “membrane conditions” are corrected by surgery but if the patient has a deviated septum plus one of these problems, correction of the septum frequently makes it easier for the patient to tolerate the membrane swelling.

Rhinoplasty Specialist

Most Rhinoplasty specialists are usually board certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery(ABFPRS). “The ABFPRS certifies surgeons exclusively in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. The ABFPRS is dedicated to improving the quality of facial plastic surgery available to the public by measuring the qualifications of candidate surgeons against certain rigorous standards.”

“To achieve certification by this Board (ABFPRS), a surgeon must:

- Complete an accredited residency training program after medical school that provides training in facial plastic surgery.

- Achieve previous certification by one or both of the basic boards in the field: The American Board of Plastic Surgery or the American Board of Otolaryngology.

- Successfully complete an additional two-day examination (written and oral) focused solely on facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. Present for peer review at least 100 surgical cases in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery for each of the previous two years.”

The ABFPRS holds its member surgeons to a published code of ethical conduct.

Payman Simoni, MD is a dual board certified facial plastic surgeon. Dr. Simoni’s background in nasal surgery combined with his natural looking results, has made him one of the most sought after rhinoplastic Surgeons in Beverly Hills, CA.
More than ever, a lot of people going to gym are getting themselves acquainted with Swiss ball exercises and there's good reason to believe that this trend is not ending any soon. You might have come across the term "Swiss ball" by some other name such as a fitness ball, exercise ball or a stability ball but rest assured all of these are simply different names to one and the same thing.

The entire philosophy behind Swiss ball exercise is the strengthening of a few essential muscles or bones in the body which are immensely responsible for the stability and strength of the entire body. Many engage into exercise using the Swiss ball simply to have a more interesting workout instead of the usual monotonous workout with dumbbells or stable machines.

A Swiss ball is soft and flexible due to which there is no hardening contact with muscles but rather a soft cushioning effect is produced which makes it easy on the contact muscles. It is due to this “cushioning effect” that Swiss ball exercises are virtually harmless provided you have the ability to balance your body. It is during this act of balancing one’s body that several under utilized muscles are brought into action which leads to their strengthening.

There are several Swiss ball exercises for different parts of the body. The most basic of these are sit-ups. In this exercise, you are required to sit on the Swiss ball with your back positioned on it. This is followed by positioning of a small ball known as medicine ball, between your legs and then you are required to sit up with your arms placed across your chest.

Another basic Swiss ball exercise simply involve sitting on the Swiss ball and balancing your body for short durations of five minutes with continuous small, not sudden or drastic, movements of the body. This may sound simple but it goes a long way in giving a thorough workout to certain muscles especially those located in the abdomen.

Another area in which Swiss balls are popularly used is in the elimination of lower back pains. The number one reason for lower back pain is the imbalance in the human posture while doing basic exercises such as walking. Back pains are predominantly found in people who bend their back while walking. For such people, exercising using Swiss ball is an ideal solution.

This is because while using a Swiss ball, there is no other option but to keep one’s back straight if you don’t want to be on the floor! Further, a Swiss ball provides a full range of solution for back pains and stretches. A word of caution though, it would be good to consult your gym instructor in case you’re a complete newbie to using Swiss ball for back pain elimination. This is serious stuff and you don’t want to mess this up into increasing your pack pain or some other injury.

Hamstring exercises are another breed of Swiss ball exercises which are used for the complete workout of the lower torso. In this case, you have to lie on the floor while the heels of your feet will be on the ball itself. Now you need to dig your feet into the ball while slowly lifting your pelvis simultaneously. You have to maintain this position for a maximum of five seconds before returning to the relaxed state.

An advanced version of this Swiss ball exercise is used for the workout of hip muscles. This is known as the Hip Flexor and Gluteal Exercise and it simply involves lifting of your legs alternatively, one at a time, while doing the hamstring exercise. Again, this only needs to be done for a maximum period of five seconds.

For many mortgage professionals, frequent travel is a way of life. A big concern of frequent travelers is how to remain productive without access to the normal resources. Sometimes, that first trip leaves you feeling like a fish out of water. Especially if you didn’t anticipate your customer’s needs. But with each new journey, you will learn more ways to function efficiently. With a little planning, you can make your time away transparent to those you communicate with daily. Here are a few tips to make it happen:

1. Make a list of the things that need to be accomplished before your departure. Rate locks, file submissions, or any other critical appointments should be handled before you leave.

2. Contact processors, loan officers, underwriters, and other individuals to let them know you’ll have limited availability from _____ to _______.

3. Sign-up for an e-fax or other electronic fax service that will allow you to view, send, and receive faxes over the Internet. This will allow you to function just as if you were in the office. 4. Make a resource list for the things you will need to do while away. Include phone and fax numbers, website addresses, access codes, and passwords. Store this data on your pc, phone, or both.

5. Make a copy or scan an image of documents you may wish to reference while away. This will allow you to stay on top of the most important issues.

6. Save important letters, forms, and files to a jump drive, a CD, or e-mail them to yourself so that you can access them as needed. Convert documents that you would normally fax to a PDF format so they can be e-mailed but not altered.

7. Check the quality of your cell and laptop batteries. Get new ones if you will be without access to electricity to recharge for long periods of time. Be sure to pack your chargers as well.

8. Add a wireless card to your laptop if it does not have one already. Although your hotel may have their own Internet café, these rooms are sometimes crowded or have limited hours of availability. If the hotel charges for linking to their wireless network, if may be cheaper to purchase a wireless connection card through your cellular service provider.

9. Pack an Ethernet cord and a phone cord. This will allow you to get online no matter what type of connectivity your hotel has. You can log on to AOL or some other network.

10. Take a phone card as a backup. It may come in handy in areas where your cell phone signal drops. Used in conjunction with a cell phone, you can eliminate hotel phone charges altogether.

11. Pack pain reliever, antacid, and cold medicine just in case. If you have to buy these things on the road, they’ll cost double what they normally do.

12. Download audio files to an Ipod, mp3, or CD. Music or motivational audios may be just what you need to balance your day. You can also listen to a replay of a training session.

13. During your trip, incorporate as many of your normal activities as possible. Continue to exercise. Drink plenty of water and eat right. Take your vitamins. Keep in contact with family and friends. Let them know what time to call you.

14. Plan your day before going to your daily meeting, training, or appointment. This will allow you to make the most of breaks, lunches, or other dead time.

15. Make use of the special features on your phone. Text messaging and Internet access can be a lifesaver when you’re on the road.

16. Get the scoop on your hotel’s amenities in advance. The last thing you want is to have trouble connecting with your customers and your team because of limited resources. Go online to the hotel’s corporate website for a virtual tour. You might also check out ratings and feedback on Hotels.com. Ask lots of questions.

17. Take along a healthy snack and a bottle of water or two. If you experience a flight delay or get stuck in rush hour traffic, you won’t be bothered by hunger or thirst.

18. Pack as light as possible. Pulling heavy luggage plus a laptop through the airport is no joke. Choose a jacket that will get you through the week. Bring a pair of dress shoes that go with everything and a pair of sneakers or sandals for down time. Your feet will thank you. Switch up your shirt/blouse with a basic pair of pants/skirt. Take travel size toiletries instead of full size ones to make more room in you luggage. And for the ladies: leave some of your hair artillery, fragrances, and makeup at home. This stuff alone can take up a full piece of luggage. You’ll look just as good with the bare essentials.

19. Initiate contact with your customers and team members early in the day while you’re away. This will allow you to deal with challenges or concerns at a time when it is convenient for you. Otherwise, you may find yourself bombarded with phone calls and emergencies that could have been avoided had you made contact earlier.

20. Be realistic. There is no way that everything is going to be perfect when you’re away. If it were, then no one would need you in the first place. Take care of the biggest priorities. Give training and guidance before you leave and then delegate as many projects as you can. Make a plan to take care of other things within the first few days of your return.

When you plan your business trip well, you will feel far less pressure and frustration. It allows you to focus on the real purpose of your trip. You might even have the opportunity to get the rest and relaxation you find difficult to squeeze in at home. So, don’t fret about your next trip. Think more about how it will enhance your business and rejuvenate your mind and body. Happy traveling!

Lower pack pain is characterized by a nagging soreness at the lower back area starting from the waist up to the hips and buttocks. If you are suffering from this condition, you will know how debilitating lower back pain is and how much it can impair your functions every day.

Here is the thing, you can greatly alleviate this condition if you pick the right mattress. There are so many orthopedic-type mattresses available that specifically cater to this particular problem. Your job is to sift through these choices to find the one that will really work for you well.

Let me give you an advice-go for those mattresses that have a slightly cushiony and bouncy mattress feel but still firm enough to give sturdy support to your upper body. Experts say that the upper body needs a firmer support but the lower part of the body needs something to cushion it.

Your best bet is to go for latex mattresses. This type of mattress is well-known for its slightly bouncy and slightly firm mattress feel. Latex itself is bouncy so you should expect the mattress to have the same feel to it.

You have two options-choose Talalay latex or Dunlop latex. Talalay is bouncier than Dunlop which is why this is more popular and lot more common today. But the fusion of Dunlop and Talalay in one mattress provides a supportive and comforting mattress that can withstand wears and tears for a long time.

If some companies tell you that Dunlop is better or that Talalay is better, do not believe it right away as both these latex manufacturing style is inherently good. The pincore holes integrated in it are the ones that can give you right combination of support and comfort that your body needs.

On the other hand, memory foam mattress is also known as a mattress that can alleviate pressure points, body aches and pains. However, some people feel lower back pains more likely because of the unbalanced comfort and support as the mattress tend to be a bit firmer than what you may have been accustomed to so it takes a bit of time getting used to it.

Your best bet is to go for semi-firm mattresses. Latex can be a bit expensive so you have to run through as many choices as you can to find out which brand is really worth buying.

For more great advice on a range of leading mattress such as the Sealy Mattress and Serta Mattress, go to bestmattressratings.com.

If you are dealing with health issues caused by your sleep position but can't seem to change the way you sleep, consider supporting your sleep position to prevent associated health problems.

What kind of position do you sleep in at night? Ones sleep position can be the cause of many health problems including neck pain, back pain, and premature wrinkles especially if it is not properly supported. If you are dealing with health issues caused by your sleep position but can’t seem to change the way you sleep, consider supporting your sleep position to prevent associated health problems. There are four main sleep positions: back, side, fetal and stomach. Each has their pros and cons that can be improved with the proper support.

The back position is the best sleep position it can prevent neck and back pain and minimize wrinkles, however, it often causes snoring. When you sleep on your back it keeps your neck, head and spine in a neutral position which is good and because there is nothing pushing on your face it can help prevent wrinkles. Yeah! The only problem with sleeping on your back is the greater tendency for one to snore. To help support a back sleeping position use one pillow to keep your head and neck supported. The key is to keep the incline at a minimum and not prop your head too much.

The side position is the next best sleep position. It is the recommended position for pregnant women can prevent neck and back pain and causing less snoring because the spine is elongated. However, with side sleeper’s smashing their face all night sleeping on your side can cause wrinkles. The best way to support a sleeping on your side is with a full body pillow that fills the space above the shoulders to keep the neck in a neutral position and used to tuck between your legs for improved circulation.

The fetal position is common but not idea. It does cause less snoring and is good during pregnancy but bad for your neck and back and does not minimizing wrinkles. With the knees pulled up high and the chin tucked to the chest the chances of neck and back pain are greater and cause wrinkles. The fetal position can be supported much like the side sleeping position with a body pillow that supports the head, neck, back and legs.

The worst sleep position is on the stomach. The only good thing about sleeping on your stomach is it can help ease snoring but is not helpful for avoiding neck and pack pain or minimizing wrinkles. Sleeping on the stomach puts pressure on the joints and muscles that will bother your nerves and lead to pain. It makes it difficult to maintain a neutral position for the spine and leads to soreness. If you are a stomach sleep, using just one thin pillow or nothing at all will best support your sleep position.

No matter our age, they are things that we all want to know. What are the secrets for staying young?

Obviously, eating healthy and getting enough rest is very important, but so is getting enough of the proper exercises to keep you limber and feeling good all the time. You can get those results with a stretching for seniors program that you can tailor to your current level of fitness and advance as you become more fit.

There are varieties of programs that suit seniors well: yoga for seniors helps elongate the muscles with slow and steady movements, balance exercises for seniors help you to be steadier on your feet, and many of the stretching for seniors programs help with joint pain and stiffness that is a result of arthritis or injuries. Stretching for seniors is also excellent for improving posture and eliminating the slouch or stoop that can also cause excessive back pain. By strengthening those muscles that support your core, you are strengthening your overall posture so that you won’t end up hunchbacked.

When you think of someone who is flexible and agile, you usually equate him or her with youth. However, there is no reason that older people cannot also gain that same agility by using special flexibility for seniors exercise programs that you can find on DVD for ease of use. Simply clear a spot in your living room and pop in the stretching for seniors DVD, with no need to purchase exercise equipment or special clothing.

DVD’s are excellent for learning yoga for seniors or other flexibility for seniors exercises. Each is simply presented and demonstrated and often different variations are given based on your overall fitness level, so that you can start where you’re comfortable and add more challenging exercises after you have been doing the workout for seniors exercises for awhile.

Avoiding surgery is many people’s motivation for starting a Stretching for Seniors workout program. It can be quite helpful in straightening out kinks in your back, stress knots, and arthritic joints, so stretching for seniors is highly recommended by both physical therapists and chiropractors.

Find a DVD program that targets your specific issue, whether it is lower pack pain, hip problems, or a pain in the neck, and follow those exercises for two weeks or so. Chances are, you will be so thrilled with the results of your stretching for seniors routine that you’ll want to expand your workouts. After just that short period, you will likely be limber, steady, and more balanced and you will be eager to do additional exercises.

Some of the more common causes of low back pain may be due to osteoarthritis (often age related), rheumatoid arthritis, muscle strains or sprains, herniated discs, abnormalities with the internal abdominal or pelvic organs, or osteoporosis. Back pain is frequently difficult to treat, and many turn to medication, chiropractic treatments, physical therapy, or even surgery.

Do you struggle with lower back pain?

Do you want to get relief?

1.) Introduction

It is the dreaded sentence that is always spoken with immense sorry. Nobody who has ever said, “I pinched a nerve in my lower back” has ever been happy when they said it. Who can blame them? A pinched nerve is one of the most uncomfortable, painful neurological conditions there is. I guess we never know how great our health is until we do not have it anymore.

2.) What is a Pinched Nerve?

A pinched nerve is another way of describing a nerve that has been compressed. When this occurs, the nerve can no longer function properly. As a consequence, a person may experience both motor and sensory issues which make living a normal life very difficult.

Lower pack pain is one of the problems associated with the mobility issues that go along with having a pinched nerve. The pain occurs as a result of the pressure the malfunctioning nerve puts on the surrounding bones, cartilage, tissues, and muscles in which it comes into contact.

3.) Symptoms

A compressed nerve generally results in pain shooting down the lower back and this can extend into the feet. Other symptoms of this condition include a general feeling of weakness in the feet or legs, intense muscle spasms, tingling and unusual sensations in the back and legs.

Pinched nerves arise from a variety of reasons; it could be from something as uncomplicated as sleeping in an awkward position, being in a car accident, or being knocked down hard in a football game.

4.) I Pinched a Nerve in My Lower Back? What Can I Do?

Luckily, pinched nerves can be treated. Most medical interventions either require the use of medications with unpleasant side effects or complex surgeries. Neither of these options will provide immediate pain relief.

There are less involved treatments such as over the counter medicines and hot and cold compresses, but none of these solutions offer long-term positive results. One treatment that can provide an instantaneous reduction in pain is a back brace. No, they do not have to be really bulky to be effective. Those days are long gone.

Back braces operate by providing stability to the spine and restricting unwanted movement. In doing this, a back support also safeguards the affected area from further injury. After the injury has healed, a brace can continue to be worn during demanding activity for additional support reinforcement.

Once they start using back braces, individuals who typically looked unhappy because in their own words, “I pinched a nerve in my lower back”, stop looking so miserable. The back support helps to alleviate the pain and gives them the freedom to go about their daily lives.

Note: We strongly believe in the use of back supports, but it is best to consult your local, licensed orthotist (brace specialist) when it comes to getting the best brace for your needs.
